Harry Potter Ebook Covers for Pottermore by Olly Moss

Over the years, the Harry Potter books’ covers already have many variations from different illustrators. There’s Jonny Duddle who illustrated the children’s edition, Jim Kay for the Harry Potter Illustrated Editions, and Andrew Davidson for the adult paperback editions, among other versions. The newest talent to illustrate his interpretation of the legacy of The Boy Who Lived is self-proclaimed Potterhead, Olly Moss.

Olly Moss is known for his distinctive use of negative space in his illustrations, and became widely popular for his reinvention of movie posters, including The Star Wars Original Trilogy, Spirited Away, and The Lord of the Rings. In December 2015, Pottermore, the interactive Harry Potter website, announced that they have commissioned Olly Moss to create the covers for the first ever worldwide digital release of the Harry Potter books. For any Potterhead, this might be one of the closest things anyone can get to receiving a Hogwarts acceptance letter!

Winchester, UK-based Moss created the new cover designs for the Harry Potter eBooks, which are available through all leading retailers around the globe and will be available through Pottermore Shop this year. According to the Pottermore website, Moss said that,

Harry Potter has always been my favourite. I skipped [Philosopher’s Stone] because I was being a weird snob about it – I was ten. Then by the time Prisoner of Azkaban was out, I remember my mum saying I should read them…

On his work on the ebook covers, he added,

Deathly Hallows is my favourite cover, because it’s the image that has summed up Harry Potter in my mind for such a long time. The scar – it feels like the culmination of the entire series and that’s the image that’s been stuck in my head.

The covers were made carefully as to not give out any visual spoilers but are striking enough to get your attention. His illustrations are definitely inspiring and something that graphic designers and illustrators, including us at MicroCreatives, can take pointers from.
