Common Mistakes of a Graphic Designer

In any career, trial and error is anything but ordinary especially for the young professionals. While making mistakes is typically normal, and more often than not people always learn from their mistakes. Otherwise, it may lead to a series of mishaps that could ruin the reputation of their employers and they could even risk losing their jobs. The same thing goes in the web design industry where graphic designers play an important role in presenting their companies’ profiles and interests to clients in the best possible ways through their websites. But there are others who keep on making mistakes because of their lack of experience and knowledge in their chosen field.

Below are the common blunders that young graphic designers usually stumble upon every time they begin on a new project.

  • Immediately starting work without a design brief – Some designers get an idea of what they’d like to do and are so sure of it that they don’t even bother checking the design brief or asking for help from their bosses as to how they should proceed with their work. Remember that asking for a design brief gives everyone an overview of client requirements that need to be done in order to finish the assigned task accordingly.
  • Unintentionally neglect the target audience – Graphic designers are part of companies’ team of messengers. They interpret the company goals that are intended for a specific group of people or a target audience. Yet others tend to be subjective and base their designs on their personal preferences. This often leaves unpleasing results and mixed messages since they delivered their companies’ intentions to a different audience type.
  • Sometimes don’t communicate with clients – Some are just extremely shy that they don’t coordinate with their customers. But it’s important to address concerns or suggestions to clients for designers to know what they must improve on a project. Furthermore, it gives clients an impression that their feedback matters.
  • Procrastinating – Graphic designers and other professionals normally succumb to the thought of finishing their work the next day until the deadline arrives. In any field, deadlines are necessary since they measure the people’s capacity and speed in doing an important task. If they don’t start ahead of time, they will cram the process and end up submitting projects that are just below standards.
  • Don’t begin with the neutral colors – Depending on the color scheme provided by the client or the logo of the company, it’s always safe to start with neutral colors and build from there. Black and White are the fundamental elements in design that determine if promotional materials will look good even without the actual colors. Some clients don’t require a spectral of colors because they maintain a certain degree of formality. But there are web designers that start with the real colors right away without putting the clients’ and audience needs into consideration.
  • Literally copy and paste – Others get artistic inspirations of others and pose them as their own. While this method saves time and effort, take note that this is a form of stealing since it violates the authenticity of materials in accordance with the intellectual property law and they could find themselves behind bars.
  • Have a tendency to exaggerate – Some artists over do their designs in the hope of flattering clients. Sad to say, fancy artworks can be straining on the eyes and the audience might not take their websites seriously. Always observe the minimalist concept for professional websites unless clients tell them to create a specific design for them.
  • Usually lose their self-esteem – When receiving negative criticisms, other designers lose interest in their work and resolve to self-pity. While positive criticisms are good, remember to look at nasty remarks as a way to motivate people to strive harder.

Committing mistakes is a part of human nature, it might not be a very nice experience but it’s a reminder that there is always a room for improvement.
