Amping Up Your SEO
Since the web’s search engine algorithms have been updated for numerous times (yes, I’m talking about you Google), its always best practice to amp up SEO (search engine optimization).
Here’s a list of the most important techniques that we can use for our SEOs given by Blogger and SEO expert Faizan Khamisani came up with:
Don’t make the title tag longer than 70 characters. This ensures that it is effectively used and the title should be according to your page. It’s best to use the longest phrased keyword within the title tag.
Use this tag smartly. Use no more than 160 characters in describing your page content. Use your most competitive keywords in the text.
Target your 5 most competitive keywords within the tag. While Google may have said that this tag does not affect your rankings, use it still for other search engines (Yahoo! Bing).
HX (HEADINGS) TAGS
Use HX tags with each of your main article headings / sections. Use h1 for the main headings and the rest in h2, h3, h4 and so on. Use your keywords in the headings and highlight them in the eye of search engines with these HX tags.
Optimize each image with ALT and Title tags. Use keywords smartly within the tags to optimize image name as well.
SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY URLS
Ask your developer to make URLS easy to read, short and clean. Avoid using signs like ‘&’, spaces, ‘?’, etc. in your URLs to avoid looking like spam.
QUALITY CONTENT IS KING
In the SEO industry, “Content is King” – quality counts! Each page ideally should have at least 500 words of great quality content.
Whether it be text or image based, your navigation should be crawlable
Make your webpages load faster by externalizing your JS and CSS codes. While this may not be the best choice, it’s sometime better to progressively inline JS and CSS for faster rendering and perceived time.
Engage your customers/readers via internal linking within your site. This will also help you control the bounce rate as well.
Build a good relation in the eye of search engines by adding links to external high quality websites (read: HIGH QUALITY). This helps sites get to higher rankings on search engines.
Let your users and search engines see your actual business with geo-tagging.
Use authorship to take the ownership of the content you publish on your website. Own it!
Sites with social signals can get better rankings in search engines. Adding social media buttons encourages your readers to share your website’s content on their profiles.
Websites with too much down-time can be-indexed from and won’t be able to rank higher on search engines. It’s best to have a website hosting serve that’s up and running 24/7, with at least 99.9% uptime.
The robots.txt is a text file webmasters create to instruct robots (typically search engine robots) how to crawl and index pages on their website.
Make sure you have added and setup the analytics code so you can properly analyze your website.
You can use Google Webmaster Tools to add and verify ownership of your sites. These webmaster tools will also help to analyze the on-page validations.
